Audrey Taylor has carved a living out of society’s fringes using her supernatural abilities and street smarts. Freedom—sleeping beneath the open skies and under the radar—is all she’s ever needed. But when an ancient council of witches discovers her powers, Audrey must submit to their training or be stripped of her gifts and her memory. Audrey knows better than to trust anyone, and she’s never worked well with others, so it’s just her luck to be assigned a withdrawn and irritable falconer as her mentor. Even more disturbing is her desire to tear through his brooding façade and bare the man beneath when she should be focused on escape.

Corvin Wright values the solace of his duties and only finds peace among the birds entrusted to his keeping. But the council no longer sees a use for his unique gifts, and his sanctuary is in danger unless he can earn his place by babysitting a fledgling witch. The task becomes daunting when his apprentice turns out to be wilder and more broken than any creature he’s ever cared for. Her fiery spirit and dangerous beauty challenge every ideal of the life he’s built. As Audrey wrestles with her captivity and the bonds of responsibility laid upon her, Corvin must find a way to tame her wild heart before she breaks his.

Corvin and Audrey are two halves of a whole but don’t know it. They both seek freedom in their own ways. Audrey wants freedom from the shackles her life has thrown on her from being a foster child, a juvenile delinquent, a patient in an asylum. and finally an initiate under the power of the Synod (the witches council). Corvin just wants to be left alone with his forest and his birds – heck his best friend is a raven named Smoke (great name for a raven!). Yet when Corvin’s mother, the head of the Synod Fortress in their part of the world, forces them together something beyond the magic they can do happens.

All the characters in To Tame a Wild Heart are so well-developed you can see the darkness in the creatures who live in the rafters and feel the whoosh of the dark cloaks the Zyne (their name for natural witches) all seem to sport. The story moves along at a quick pace and there is plenty of action. The romance between Corvin and Audrey is not a quick hot flare, but rather a slow burning ember that finally sparks towards the end. There is some hot physical action, but it is pretty light by Behind Closed Doors standards. It is more sexual tension than hot magically bodies coming together.

The story is great despite the less than frequent steamy action. It is a nice break to read a paranormal book with at least a little care to the 18+ crowd. If you are looking for a fast-moving action pack story with a little flare on the side – To Tame a Wild Heart is a great pick!
