The Mercenary is a great Sci-Fi adventure. Saakshi is on a prison work furlough serving drinks at a space station. Convicted of fighting with the resistance, she waits for her contract to be over and return home to her planet. Unfortunately, she has attracted the attention of an officer who previously captured her and sent her to prison in the first place. His intentions are to make her his sex slave and torture her for his pleasure. In desperation, Saakshi propositions another patron and mercenary, Zoran. Her hope is sex for protection will give her the chance to get through the rest of her sentence. Zoran is big and scary, but has a big heart and is very drawn to Saakshi. What starts out as an arrangement for protection quickly turns to love and a true fight for Saakshi’s planet.
The Mercenary is a fast-paced sci-fi adventure. While a little light on the spicy stuff we at Behind Closed Doors Book Review like the story is really engaging and fun to read. The light spicy factor is more than made up with a great story. The characters are well drawn out and well layered in their motivation without being predictable. I really look forward to learning more about the inter-planetary conflict and Zoran’s internal conflict of watching another group be oppressed is an interesting commentary. The Mercenary is a thoughtful adventure with politics and romance.
I really enjoyed The Mercenary and look forward to more in the series.
